Day #8- I love fresh, clean clothes. I love bright white socks. I love fluffy, warm blankets and towels. I love freshly shrunken jeans that I can barely fit around my hips. (I am really sticking to the fact that that is a result of my dryer and not a result of the chocolate cake that I had for breakfast lunch and dinner 🙂 I love the smell of the dryer in the air. It makes me feel so happy and productive.
Oh, I love those things. I however, hate the process of getting them to that point. I really only detest 2 jobs in my house, dishes and laundry. Bring on the potties, vacuuming, scrubbing and dusting. However, the constant repetitiveness and monotony of doing the same thing, over and over, day after day makes me just loathe doing them. But, I will share with you what I am grateful for.
First of all, I am grateful that I even HAVE a washing machine. There have been countless times in my life that I have had to live without. On my mission, everything was washed by hand. There was one area that we all pitched in to rent a washing machine once a week. It was expensive and it looked and behaved like it was straight out of a WWI museum. Secondly, up until this last year, my washing machine would flood 4 out of every 5 times that I would use it. I am really not kidding. I would sit on pins and needles waiting to mop up the water off the floor. I now, gratefully, have both a working, albeit temperamental, washer and dryer! YEAH!
I have experimented with every single product on the market for cleaning clothes. I have tried every stain remover. I have bought every brand of detergent. I dabbled more than a little bit with the wide variety of fabric softeners out there. I have switched looking for both efficacy and gentleness on the skin (hoping that I could cure Nena’s skin issues… another post for another time.) I have finally compiled a list of my favorites and these are the only three that I use.
Tide: Nothing does the job like Tide. I don’t care for the price tag that it carries, but for us, it works the best. It cleans better than any other detergent that I have tried. Last week, while at the grocery store, I bought a cheaper brand. I am trying to save money and thought that I could cut that corner. However, it didn’t do a thing as far as washing the clothes. I am finding that it is worth the extra couple of dollars to use a product that really works as opposed to rewashing items because they didn’t come clean the first time. I love the scent too. It is amazing.
Downy: Aside from being the name of my little sister… (no kidding. It fits her too. She is a doll.) it makes my clothes smell and feel amazing. Everything comes out softer and fluffier than you could ever imagine. Toad loves to help me get the clothes out of the dryer. When we are doing blankets and towels, he will wrap himself up in them and snuggle down. I think that the combo between Tide and Downy is what has me convinced. Oh, and it has to be the dryer sheets. I am not a huge fan of the liquid 🙂
Fels-Naptha: This stuff is a miracle. I found out about it from a friend who told me that it was good for getting grass stains out of baseball pants. So, I bought it. $1.25 at the grocery store. I pulled it out when I inadvertently dried a white shirt that had tomato and chocolate ground into it. I scrubbed a little Fels-Naptha on it and washed it again. AS GOOD AS NEW!
So, this is the way that I am making lemonade out of lemons. If I have to do laundry, I might as well love the way I do it.
