One of my favorite things about teaching, especially lower grades, is the fun that you get to experience with all of these great little kids. At the end of the school year, we had a different theme every day for two weeks. We had cars day, camping day, sports day, monsters day, etc. Well, we also had a pajama. Needless to say that my pajama selection is really lacking ad not something that I would necessarily want to wear to school. I had angry bird pajamas at Christmastime and those would have been great had they not been sweats and 90 degrees out! The hunt was on!!!
I went to Walmart and was looking for some things for the kiddos and for a graphics t-shirt that I could wear with yoga pants. I walked past this pair of bright blue leggings with white stars all over them. Uhh…. AWFUL, I thought, Who would ever buy those??? I continued walking through the store and started looking at SpongeBob and Hello Kitty shirts. Then, as though the rays of heaven opened I found the perfect top… WONDER WOMAN… and it had sleeves which meant it was PERFECT.
Then… it all clicked… it all came together as one collective thought. It is a moment that only elementary school teachers understand where ugly becomes perfect and unreasonable becomes the only sane choice….. Where in the world did see those gloriously fabulous blue and star embellished stretchy pants???? Retracing my steps as quickly as I could before anyone else had a chance to snatch up those precious gems. And then… there they were…. where I had left them on the deeply discounted clearance rack. How in the world did these not get sold out the very first day that Walmart brought them into the store????
I was so proud of my newly put together pajamas. I literally thought about how cool I would look with them as I stood with all the other second grade teachers donning their versions of pajamas. I was going to rock this pajama day. I even blared my embarrassing antiquated music on the way to school making my children duck in the back seat as their mother bopped her head to Pat Benitar and Twisted Sister. I mean, seriously, how can I love those oldies???
I got all the way to school and met up with my team…. only to realize that I was the only one that joined their students in the magic that is pajama day. Aside from being slightly out of place, I loved it and I rocked it and I am totally going to double check with my team before I dress up for another theme day with the team. Either way… Now I have awesome jammies!
