This year we are shaking it up a tiny bit and doing things differently than we have in the past. For the last7 years (YES! That is how many years that we have been in this house!) we have been putting the Christmas tree in the family room. It made sense because it is large and has the fireplace and adequate seating. However, I have always missed putting the tree up in the front window. So, this year, I thought that a change of pace was in order and set it up in the front room!
Bear was very concerned that I was not capable enough to put up the tree on my own. That child has so much faith in me. Geesh! I did it though and impressed his little socks off. I have not yet been able to master the fine art of Christmas lights fuse replacement so…. Grandpa to the rescue. Love that man!
This year has been especially fun for me since Toad is now old enough to understand what is going on. He is such a quick little whip and is extremely intuitive. I really can’t get much past him. He was itching to get that tree decorated and would ask me every hour of every day (ok, three days, but still) when we were going to decorate the tree. He even proposed my giving him the box of ornaments and him doing it himself so that it would just get done.
Trying to get the whole ambiance right since pictures are forever, I asked the kiddos to get on cute matching pajamas. That turned out to be a travesty since Nena wanted to wear these nasty old money PJ’s that are her favorites, but I really don’t want to preserve pictures of those in the memory books of forever. So, she chose these….. 2 sizes to small…. and threw a fit when I asked her to change. So, I decided to not battle that one.
I got to Bear, and he had a very logical explanation as to why his pajamas were the very best and they matched. Of course they matched. How could they not. Again, a battle that I chose to forgo!
Every year we take the kiddos out to buy a new ornament. We are gaining quite the collection. Between those and the nursery and school picture ornaments, we are donning quite a festive little tree. I think that it looks an awful lot like Dollar Tree exploded in our front room, but I will admit, I LOVE it! I love that all of the ornaments have a special meaning and bring back such sweet memories of the past. The kiddos love to recall when they got them as well.
I often forget how small they really are in the grand scheme of life. They are cute as buttons and such treats. And yes, there are days that I have to do my daily affirmations that “my children are blessings” over and over. However, for the most part, they really try to be the very best people that they can be.
I love this picture. I love how you wouldn’t ever guess that they were bickering the whole time over who got to put certain ornaments on the tree. I love that they fought over who got to stand on the chair!
Viola! The finished product! Don’t you just get a kick out of Toad. He really is a man of a thousand faces.
Another shot at trying to get all three to look happy and joyful together.
I guess that this is as close as I am going to get to it!
