Birthdays are always such a fun occasion in our family. They generally last for at least a week! They get a birthday with me, one with their dad and then a big family birthday with my brothers and sisters.
This year, Nena’s birthday landed on a Sunday, which I always enjoy because we can spend the day relaxing together. The boys and I woke up early and made her double fudge brownies. They are amazingly fantastic and gluten free (the recipe is on blog that is linked on my sidebar.) Thanks Cami for constantly coming to the rescue.
One thing that I love about baking and cooking is that the kiddos really enjoy every minute of it. Toad loves to crack the eggs and Kaeson loves the mixer. They are both such fantastic helpers.
We spent the day relaxing, but in the evening we opened a few presents and had our version of cake. Nena is obsessed with American Girl Dolls right now. She loves them. She has been dying for some accessories and clothes for her dolls. This time around she got a table and chair set for her dolls and some clothes.
Now, me being the slightly cheap mother that I am, I am not going to spend $15 for a doll outfit that I could make for free (have you seen my fabric stash downstairs?????) I rarely take into account that although it doesn’t cost me anything, they do take some time. Somewhere in the back of my little mind though, I think that someday she will treasure the thought that her mom made her some doll clothes. Who knows. Either way, I enjoy doing it, so that is what she got.
And as you can plainly see, there is no dress code here on birthday evenings. Pants are completely optional…. and the boys take advantage of that.
Regardless of how they turned out, she loved the outfits.
The brownies were a hit. I miss doing the big elaborate birthday cakes for her, but that will come with time. I am sure that as soon as I learn to bake more effectively, I will be able to make those cute cakes again 🙂I will admit, gluten free isn’t that bad when you have brownies that taste this good.
