Time out is a glorious time. It is meant to be a time for thinking over what has transpired and for what reasons you have been sent to sit by yourself.
For me growing up, time out was in the bathroom sitting on the potty. We had to sit there for the determined amount of time and think about what we had done. That usually lasted for about 30 seconds. At the end of those few seconds, the sting of being in trouble had worn off and the new thought of entertaining myself while in the bathroom became the new focus. I remember making up finger plays and toilet paper rings. Such great times.
Well, I saw a little of myself in Kaeson today. This afternoon, Kaeson was put on a chair in the dining room (our general time out spot) for throwing a magnet across the room. This is a situation that we have been trying to remedy and so far I am not having much luck.
Kaeson has an attention span of about 10 seconds but generally stays on or near his chair during time out. I ran to grab some clothes from the dryer and returned to see that he had been overcome with the urge to touch and made a masterpiece out of my crystal goblets. Having no guile, he simply looked at me and said’ “tah dah… mommy, I’m magic.”
He must be magic because he was able to magically put a big smile on my face and get himself off the time out chair.
