Today I ran into a coworker that I haven’t seen since before the Christmas break. We are not only good friends, but I have taught both of her daughters when they were in second grade. She is originally from Latin America, but has lived here for a substantial number of years. We get along well and have good conversations. She lets me practice my Spanish with her.
Well today she ran up and gave me a hug and we chatted for a minute. THen she said that we have a mutual friend. I was curious. She said, “Well, not exactly friends, but you two have met.” She went on to mention the woman’s name (a very Latin name.) I had no idea who she was talking abut. She laughed and said that it had taken her a while to make the connection as well.
She repeated their conversation. Apparently this woman told my friend that she had met someone that worked at the same school. No connection. She said that I spoke Spanish and spoke Spanish really well. No connection. She went on to say that I spoke like a Dominican (where I served my mission) with all of the lingo that they used. No connection. She said that she thought that I had served my mission there. No connection. She said that I had little kids that went to the school with me. No connection. She went to say that I was tall and blonde. No connection.
By this time we were both laughing, and hard. Most people would have figured it out by the second clue. She said she felt so silly that it took her this long since it was so obviously me, but I have been in similar situations in the past.
My friend then asked her how we had met. She was told that I came to her house to buy some shoes from her. CONNECTION! The lights went off in her head and she knew exactly who she was referencing. “AAAHHHHHH, Darci!” Yep… you can explain all of my accolades and distinguishing characteristics as a teacher, but people only get it if you mention shoes. I guess it is my signature. And do you know what, I don’t mind it at all. Bring on the shoes.
And as an added treat, these are the shoes boots that sparked this conversation. They aren’t the ones that I bought from her friend, but they are adorably cute. I am in love with unique styles.
