The past year or so have been a little crazy, a little harsh, a little happy, a little sad, a little different. The past two years have made me change a lot about me and who I am. I have talked a little bit about that on this blog. I have looked back at m life at where I was, where I am and where I want to be. I am looking at this moment in my life and I am deciding where to go from here. I think it will be awesome.
I am turning 39 in a couple of weeks. I think that it is a great place to start. I am starting this year single… again. I am starting this year strong, capable, healthy and honest. I am starting this year as ME.
I want to use this year before my 40th birthday (I still can’t believe that I am getting to this age) doing activities that I have either wanted to do or wanted to rediscover about myself. I want to spend this year working on and becoming a better me.
I have looked at myself and my wants and needs, asked friends, looked for ideas on the internet and tried to come up with my perfect list. I received many suggestions that were awesome, that I loved, and that wouldn’t work. I have been on a hot air balloon ride (was proposed to on one.) I have been on a zip line. I have been swimming and swam within 10 feet of a shark. I have fallen in love, lost love, had a baby, changed careers, moved, seen both Atlantic and Pacific oceans in the same week, made something wearable, been on TV, etc. I wanted to do something new and reasonable, something that would help me rock this year.
I have been working on it for a while and think that I have finally tweeked it. It may be disappointing to some. It has some things that are a stretch for me. It has some things that I am anxious to incorporate. It has some things that will embarrass me. However, I want to experience a range.
A lot of the
1. Take a photograph every day. Post it.
I love taking pictures. People tease me about how often I click the shutter button. I would like to consciously take one picture a day and post it.
2. Dye the bottom part of my hair pink.
This is the 18 year old, Katy Perry side of me coming out. I have always wanted to dye a little piece of my hair red. This year, I am going to go big or go home… within professional limits. I teach second grade, so I can’t go crazy, but I am going to love it.
3. Read the books in m Kindle library.
I love to read. During this past couple of years, I have purchased a lot of books. A lot of them are relationship builders and self helps, and a lot of them are fun novels. I just am having a hard time keeping up with the ones that I have already purchased. This year I am going to focus on finishing my Kindle list.
4. Move houses.
This one is easy. My lease is up next year and I would like to move closer to work. I moved once before on my own. This will be my second move all on my own. Yay for women power. I am not really looking forward to packing up again, but this will be fun. Right?
5. Research and go to a 5 star restaurant.
I remember my parents took me to a major 5 star restaurant when I turned 18. I still remember what I ate. This year I want to look up to see which ones are in the area and find my favorite and go!
6. Do something nice for someone every day.
This last year, one of my little students came up to my aide and handed her a little pin. My aide told her thank you and told her that was nice of her. My little student said, “I try to do something nice for someone every day.” Wow. That impressed me. I am going to take advice from my cute little 8 year old.
7. Send a card to a different person every week.
I read about a man who started sending a card to people that had made a difference in his life. He wrote one a week. He talked about how it made him think about the people that had done something to make his life better. I have always wanted to do that.
8. Go swimming at night.
Growing up we had a pool in our backyard. I loved it. I loved going swimming on summer nights when the lights were off and just the stars were out. I miss that and would like to do it again as an adult.
9. Girls weekend away!
I missed one of these this summer and I am bummed about it. I would love to get a group of friends and find something fun to do.
10. Go through and get rid of 50% of what I own.
It is cathartic to simplify and reduce. I have accumulated a lot over the years and I need to part with a lot of it. Moving is going to add motivation to that.
11. Get my concealed weapons permit.
Long story… funny story… but this is something that I have wanted to do for years. My dad has encouraged all of his kids to get theirs. My brothers have all done it. It is something that I want to add to my arsenal of interesting Darci facts.
12. See a show at the Tuacahn ampitheater
I have heard so much about Thriller and Little Mermaid. I want to experience it for myself.
13. Take hikes up Bridal Veil, Timponogos, Donut Falls with my kiddos.
I have never been up Bridal Veil Falls and have always wanted to. I can’t remember the last time I went to Timonogos. The one and only time I went to Donut Falls, Kyra fell off the cliff and miraculous we still have no idea how she wasn’t killed. I would like to go back and make that a better memory.
14. Record a tender mercy every day.
I read a book called Divine Signatures where a man found moments in the day that were seemingly inconsequential, but in reality, were tiny miracles. I started to look for little moments of blessings in my life and was surprised at the amount of times that coincidences were not so coincidental. I want to record them in a journal.
15. Restart my craft blog
Oh, I had so much fun with this when I did it. I used to come up with tutorials, try other’s tutorials, demonstrate things… It was therapy for me and even landed me a spot on morning tv. I gave that up when I married again and was engrossed in trying to build a new marriage. I am back alone and even though I now work full time, I need this creative outlet in my life.
16. Attend a black tie event.
I absolutely LOVE dressing up. Love love love love love it. Here’s the thing… I never seem to have an opportunity to dress fancier than for church. I want to find an occasion to put on a fancy dress, glittery jewelry and amazing heels.
17. Write my story.
I have an interesting life. I have had some very unique experiences. I have had some really intense experiences, and some very amazing blessings that have accompanied those experiences. I have changed and become a completely different person. I have learned so much from other’s experiences and I have had the chance to share mine. I know that writing it down will not only help me, but may someday speak to others.
Wear a different outfit every day and record where I got it and for how
I am a HUGE thrift shopper and get amazing deals. I am really proud of it. Going back to work threw me into a new life where sweats and tennies wouldn’t cut it. I started looking for more professional clothes. I found the most amazing bargains and I was having so much fun. I loved finding cute clothes for next to nothing. This year, I would like to wear a different outfit and be able to see how little I spent on it.
19. Learn how to better use my DSLR.
I love my camera. I want to learn how to use all of the settings, lenses, and features. I love taking pictures and want to do it the very best way that I can.
20. Print and frame pictures that I have taken.
I love taking pictures, but they ended up spending their whole lives on my hard drive. I would love to get some of them printed and hung in my home. I have the frames. I have the space. I just need to get my act together and
21. Give my bedroom a makeover
I like to have a place of retreat and respite. I love to meditate and think and have a sanctuary of sorts. I think that most practical place for that is my bedroom. I am single. Again. I want to start that room over with colors, patterns, and objects that make me happy. I have a good idea of what I want to do. I have a good portion of the things that I would like to use. Now, it is just time, creativity and fun.
22. Pull an epic prank.
My dad is the king of pranks. He always has been. I would love to pull a prank as he has.
23. Go to Moab
I have done this once before, but I did it a couple of weeks out of a major surgery and with a baby in my arms the whole time. I would like to experience that with a healthy body and a first grader instead.
24. Find and wear the perfect red lipstick
I LOVE lipstick. I have yet to find a perfect red. They are hard to find. They are hard to wear. They are hard to pull of well. I want to find the perfect one and wear it on a night out.
25. Go to a concert.
I haven’t been to a concert in years. There are so many concerts going on during the summer time that I would love to make it to one. My first choice would be Katy Perry, but she has been sold out for such a long time. I just love getting out and enjoying the beat and the sound.
26. Sleep under the stars.
A camp out, an outing or a night out with my kiddos on the tramp. It was something that I loved doing as a child. We would sleep outside on the back balcony and watch the bug zapper for entertainment. I haven’t don’t that since I was in high school. Time to revisit an old favorite.
27. Sing Karaoke in front of a group… not just in my shower.
I am known for my amazing vocal skills. Actually, no. No I am not. I get more nervous singing than almost anything else. I have always backed out of Karaoke because it scares the living daylights out of me. So, I want to get up and Karaoke in front of a group to get over my little fear.
28. Write in my personal blog once a week
I used to write in my blog every day. I found it so therapeutic and stress relieving. I stopped writing a year or so ago. My life was not in a good place. I didn’t want to lie on my blog, but I didn’t want to write what was wrong, so I left it blank. I have missed it terribly. I miss putting my thoughts out to the universe.. or google. I miss being able to work through my good days, bad days, and in between all in one convenient journal. I want that peace in my life back.
29. Go to a drive in Movie.
I haven’t ever done this and think that it has to be awesome!
30. Prepare an emergency kit.
This is something that I have wanted to do for years. I once heard a woman talk about being in an emergency situation while on vacation and they had just happened to bring their emergency kit. It is something that has been on my mind for years, but it hasn’t always been a high priority, but it is constantly on my mind.
31. Do a dirty dash, a color run, a 10K, and a night run.
I have learned to love running. It is one of the most relaxing activities that I have ever participated in. The training isn’t always my favorite, but I love the races.
32. Restart my Etsy shop.
I used to love to keep my Etsy shop stocked. I made a decent amount of money all things considered. It isn’t so much for the money (although money is always nice) it is also for my sanity. I love to craft and sew. I often feel like I am going to explode if I don’t get my creative energies met. So, this help me get my groove on, earn money and get rid of things all at the same time.
33. Go on 1 on 1 dates with my kids.
This was a great idea from a friend. I miss all of the time that I was able to spend with my kids when I was a stay at home mom. I feel that my kids often go by the wayside as I am so busy trying to get work, the house, cooking, and other matters taken care of. I want to make sure that I really take time to enjoy them while I can, while they are young and while they still want to spend time with their mom.
34. Drive a sports car.
Another great suggestion by a friend. I love cars. I love to drive. I used to own a little sports car and I loved it. I would love to find the opportunity to drive a real, fancy sports car… just on a test drive or an experience. I am so excited to get this one checked off.
35. Travel out of state.
Traveling is one of my favorite things to do. I love to get out of dodge and see new things. I don’t care where I go, but I want out of the state this year.
36. Make a memory box.
Find momentos and treasures and things that bring meaning an light into my life and put them into a box. I want to make a capsule of sorts for my daughter to look at years from now and know what her mom was really like.
37. Learn to belly dance.
I am not a great dancer. I used to latin dance well, but now… well, my moves are a little lack luster. I was thinking about doing Zumba, but then belly dancing was suggested to me. You know…. why not! It is really cool to watch and way out of my comfort zone. I want to become more comfortable with moving my body. I think this is just the right thing.
38. Pick a new recipe twice a month and try it.
My picky picky kids have gone from great eaters to mac and cheese lovers. It is great for convenience, but not so great for mom’s diet. I used to be a great cook. Again… things change along the way. I would like to take every other weekend (when my kids are around) and try out a new recipe. I have so many that I think sound great. Let’s see how many the kiddos eat.
39. Visit the Ocean
I don’t know if there is anything that I crave more than being on the beach and seeing the ocean. If I could move to be right on the beach, I would in a New York minute. I used to go out to visit my grandparents in San Diego several times a year. I used to love to walk on the beach of La Jolla. I love watching the sun melt into the ocean. I love the smell of the water and the feel of the sand. Dang… now I really want to be there.
40. Go on a birthday cruise with friends to celebrate my 40th and finishing this list!!!
Ok my friends. Let’s plan this thing. I need it!
